Maginhawa Monday
8:00 PM
Five friends, set on a journey of taking food tripping to a whole new level.
We drove to Maginhawa by 6pm to check out the street everyone has been talking about. The crowd was getting heavy as we made our way inside. I was a little fickle-minded on deciding where to eat so I asked my friends to just roam around the street first and check out every joint.
There are lots of places to choose from, which made it harder for us to pick. So we walked from end-to-end until our feet got sore, then that's when we decided to try the next place we'll see.
We first tried Empire Steak, a New York-themed restaurant. The interior is simple. So simple that it's almost lackluster. The tables were draped with checkered cloths and nothing more. We ordered Beef Gyro with Cheese and their signature steak. The steak was served too dry and was too tough to chew. The beef gyro was no gastronomical experience, as well. It was a little bland, to be honest. Maybe I'm just not much of a steak person but I didn't get all the hype regarding this place. It was overpriced, too, if you'd ask me.
Moonlight shining down on Empire State.
Underwhelmed by our previous choice, we decided to go around again to have some dessert.
Our next stop is Magpie Cafe, a cafe that serves Korean desserts and beverages. It's a little crowded when we got there, but all I noticed were the writings on the glass windows. I have seen some cafes that's a little similar to this, but still, Magpie Cafe's a little different. The room is brightly-lit that complements the wooden panels. You can also smell the sweet aroma brewing from the nearby counter. It's a small, tidy place in the corner of a big street.
I saw this and I immediately thought "I wish we had an "Okay", but all that's left for us was "Goodbye". Just kidding. I don't even know what I'm saying here.
We ordered Chocolate Fountain Waffle and Chocolate Fountain Bingsoo. Both tasted good. The balance of the cold ice cream and the lukewarm waffle gives a little tingle whenever you put it inside your mouth. I also love that the waffle almost melts even before you try to chew it. I didn't get to eat much of the Bingsoo because it's not my order. Although, I tried to beg for a scoop and it tasted almost identical to the waffle except colder.
We took a side trip to Bookayukay, a thrift shop for every bookworm. It has a wide range of books of both fiction and non-fiction. They also offer other stuff like mugs, bookmarks and dvds. Its just a small room but you will still get lost in the sea of literary works. I recommend this place to everyone who loves to read but is always on a budget.
A serendipitous meeting of souls who both love books.
The night ended like every typical road trip, people were dropped off in front of their houses one by one. A night like this is what I have always been craving for, a night filled with laughs and stories to match. With goods stories, good friends and good food nothing can ever go wrong.
I am surely looking forward to the next food joints we will be trying out here in Maginhawa.
